The United Arab Emirates has accused Iran of attacking a vessel linked to its state-owned oil company, ADNOC, with a missile while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
The UAE Foreign Ministry condemned what it described as a “hostile Iranian attack” and accused Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of engaging in acts of piracy by targeting commercial shipping.
Earlier on Saturday, the UAE state news agency WAM reported that ADNOC said one of its vessels had been targeted by a missile. The company said the situation was under control.
Authorities did not disclose the name of the vessel, its cargo or the extent of any damage. No injuries were reported in the latest incident.
The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy route between Iran and Oman, previously carried around one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Shipping through the waterway has faced repeated disruptions since the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran on February 28.
The UAE said the attack violated a United Nations Security Council resolution protecting freedom of navigation and called on Iran to immediately stop attacks on commercial vessels and reopen the Strait of Hormuz fully and unconditionally.
ADNOC said on Friday that 15 of its vessels had been targeted by missiles and drones while passing through the strait since the conflict began. Three of those incidents reportedly occurred this week, resulting in one crew member being killed and 20 others injured.
ADNOC, based in Abu Dhabi, is one of the world’s major energy producers and exports crude oil, natural gas and refined petroleum products to international markets.
