US Senate Confirms Trump’s Former Lawyer Todd Blanche as Attorney General.

The United States Senate has confirmed Todd Blanche, former personal lawyer to President Donald Trump, as the country’s new Attorney General.

Blanche was approved by a narrow 50–49 vote on Saturday after Senate Republicans dismissed Democratic concerns that his appointment could further politicise the US Department of Justice.

Before joining the government, Blanche represented Trump in several criminal cases, including the New York case involving alleged hush-money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. He also served on Trump’s legal defence team in two federal cases involving classified documents and efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

Blanche had already been serving as acting Attorney General since April, when Trump removed Pam Bondi from the position.

Democrats strongly opposed his nomination, arguing that Blanche’s close relationship with Trump could compromise the independence of the Justice Department.

Senator Dick Durbin, the senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, accused Blanche of continuing to act as Trump’s personal lawyer rather than serving the interests of the American people.

The confirmation process also faced opposition within the Republican Party over several controversial proposals, including a proposed $1.8 billion fund for people Trump describes as victims of politically motivated prosecutions.

Another disputed proposal involved granting Trump and members of his family immunity from certain tax audits.

Blanche eventually eased Republican concerns by issuing a written order that scrapped the proposed “anti-weaponisation fund.” He also stated that an agreement concerning tax-audit immunity would apply only to previous tax years and not future tax filings.

His confirmation comes as the Trump administration faces continued criticism over its handling of the Justice Department and allegations that federal law enforcement is being used for political purposes.

Blanche has also faced criticism over the administration’s handling of investigative files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

With his confirmation, Blanche becomes the permanent US Attorney General after months of serving in an acting capacity.
