Two Israeli soldiers have been killed in an explosion in southern Lebanon, marking the first Israeli military fatalities since a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect in late June.
According to the Israeli military, the blast occurred when soldiers entered a site in the village of Majdal Zoun. Four other soldiers were seriously injured in the incident, while an investigation is underway to determine the nature of the explosion.
Following the incident, Israeli forces launched airstrikes on several locations in southern Lebanon, accusing Hezbollah of violating the ceasefire agreement. The Israeli military also issued an evacuation warning to residents of the village of Mansouri, the first such warning in several weeks.
Hezbollah had not released an official statement on the latest developments at the time of reporting.
The escalation coincided with negotiations in Rome between Lebanese and Israeli officials aimed at implementing a June 26 agreement. The deal provides for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from parts of southern Lebanon and the deployment of the Lebanese army in exchange for the disarmament of Hezbollah. The talks were temporarily suspended due to the renewed violence but are expected to continue.
Lebanon's Health Ministry reported that one person was killed and 12 others injured in an Israeli strike on the town of Tebnine. Additional overnight airstrikes and artillery shelling were also reported in Burj al-Shemali, Mansouri, and Majdal Zoun.
The latest conflict between Israel and Hezbollah began on March 2 after Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel following U.S. and Israeli military operations against Iran. Since then, thousands of people have been killed in Lebanon, while dozens of Israeli soldiers and civilians have also lost their lives.
