The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested 11 suspected cattle rustlers, including two nationals of the Niger Republic, and recovered 40 animals believed to have been stolen during coordinated security operations across four local government areas of the state.
According to the police, the arrests followed intelligence-led operations carried out in Gwiwa, Hadejia, Gwaram, and Taura Local Government Areas. The operations were conducted by police officers in collaboration with local vigilante groups after receiving credible intelligence and distress calls.
The command's spokesperson, SP Shi'isu Adam, said the suspects were apprehended before they could dispose of the stolen livestock. Recovered during the operation were 27 sheep, 10 goats, and three cows, making a total of 40 animals.
Police also recovered two vehicles allegedly used by the suspects to transport the stolen animals. The recovered livestock and vehicles have been taken into custody as investigations continue.
The suspects include two men from Maradi in the Niger Republic, alongside other suspects from various communities within Jigawa State.
SP Adam said investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the suspected cattle-rustling syndicate who escaped during the operations. He added that the suspects would be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State commended the officers and local vigilantes for their professionalism and swift response, reaffirming the command's commitment to intensifying intelligence-driven operations to combat cattle rustling and other violent crimes across the state.
He also warned criminals to abandon illegal activities or face the full weight of the law.
