BA team of sanitation workers in southern Italy successfully recovered a €1 million ($1.15 million) winning lottery ticket after its owner accidentally threw it away, following a remarkable day-long search through collected household waste.
The woman, whose identity was not disclosed, had played her usual lottery numbers before visiting a local shop to check the results. When the lottery terminal displayed a "non-payable" message—indicating that the prize was too large to be paid out at the retail outlet—she mistakenly believed the ticket had not won and discarded it in a rubbish bin.
She later realized her mistake after a family member confirmed that her numbers—2, 4, 8, 10, and 51—matched the winning combination. By then, the waste bin had already been emptied into a garbage truck.
Upon receiving an urgent call from the woman, the local waste management company, SANB, quickly traced the truck's route and stopped it before the waste reached the processing facility.
To safely search for the ticket, the truck was redirected to a specialized site, where sanitation workers spent an entire day sorting through piles of household waste under difficult conditions.
Their efforts paid off when the winning ticket was found, remarkably still intact.
The woman reportedly burst into tears after being informed that her ticket had been recovered.
SANB administrator Roberto Nicola Toscano praised the workers for their professionalism, organization, and determination, saying the successful recovery would not have been possible without their dedication.
Although the operation would normally have been funded by taxpayers because SANB is a public entity, the lottery winner has reportedly agreed to cover all additional costs incurred during the search.
