Kano Assembly Suspends Three Local Government Chairmen Over Alleged Misconduct

The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended the chairmen of Bagwai, Bebeji, and Rogo Local Government Areas for three months over allegations of financial misappropriation, abuse of office, and other misconduct.

The decision followed the adoption of a report presented by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Ismail Falgore.

According to the committee, separate investigations into petitions against the three chairmen uncovered alleged financial and administrative irregularities. In Bagwai, the committee reported suspected misappropriation of public funds meant for development projects.

For Bebeji Local Government, the committee alleged abuse of office, violations of due process in contract awards, improper sale of council land, diversion of public funds, unlawful deductions from contractors' payments, and other procurement irregularities. It also claimed that some contractors were directed to pay contract funds into accounts allegedly nominated by the council chairman.

In Rogo Local Government, the committee accused the chairman of violating government policies, abusing his office, and misappropriating funds allocated for feeder road construction and electrification projects in Unguwar Dawa and Hausawa Fulani communities.

Following deliberations, lawmakers unanimously approved the committee's recommendation to suspend the three chairmen pending the completion of a full investigation. The Assembly directed the vice chairmen of the affected local governments to assume office in acting capacities during the suspension.

Speaker Ismail Falgore also instructed the committee to conclude its investigation and submit its report within 10 weeks. The Clerk of the Assembly was directed to formally communicate the resolution to the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The suspended council chairmen are Bello Abdullahi Gadanya (Bagwai), Alhassan Salisu (Bebeji), and Abubakar Mustapha (Rogo).
