German authorities have launched a counterterrorism investigation after an explosive-laden drone was discovered near a runway at Leipzig/Halle Airport, one of Europe's busiest cargo hubs.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the incident as a "new threat scenario," saying the use of an explosive drone at an airport represents a dangerous escalation in hybrid security threats.
The drone was found overnight in a restricted cargo area close to the airport's southern runway, forcing officials to suspend flights and divert several aircraft, including cargo planes operated by DHL. Bomb disposal experts safely removed the drone's detonator before reopening one of the runways.
Authorities also confirmed that a DHL cargo aircraft made an unscheduled landing in Hanover after its crew reported striking an unidentified object shortly after takeoff from Leipzig. The aircraft landed safely with only minor damage, and investigators are working to determine whether the incidents are connected.
German security agencies remain on high alert following a series of unauthorized drone flights over military sites, energy facilities, ports, and logistics centers. Officials say it is too early to determine who was responsible for the latest incident.
The investigation has been handed over to Germany's counterterrorism prosecutors after experts confirmed that the drone contained explosives.
Officials stressed that there was no immediate danger to passengers or airport staff, and most airport operations resumed after security checks were completed. The investigation into the drone's origin and intended target remains ongoing.
