Firefighting Helicopter Crash Kills Pilot and Crew Member in Utah

A pilot and a crew member have died after a firefighting helicopter crashed while battling the massive Widemouth 2 wildfire in central Utah, United States.

The Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane, operated by Helicopter Transport Services under contract with the U.S. Forest Service, crashed at about 10 a.m. local time on Friday near Richfield, in the Three Creeks Reservoir area, close to the southeastern edge of the wildfire.

The National Interagency Fire Center confirmed the deaths on Saturday, more than 24 hours after the crash. Rescue teams were initially unable to reach the wreckage because of extreme fire conditions and steep terrain. The bodies were recovered on Saturday, although officials have not yet released the names of the victims.

Authorities have ordered evacuations in parts of the affected area and closed several roads as firefighters continue efforts to contain the blaze.

Deputy Incident Commander Tyler Hecht said firefighting crews briefly paused operations following the crash before returning to the fire line.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox described wildland firefighting as one of the most dangerous jobs in the world and urged residents to remember the victims and their families.

The Widemouth 2 wildfire began after a lightning strike in Fishlake National Forest on July 27. It has burned more than 111,000 acres (45,000 hectares) and is on track to become Utah's largest wildfire of the year.

As of Saturday, officials said the fire was 24 percent contained, while extreme fire behaviour, including crown fires and long-range spotting, continued to threaten nearby communities.

The incident marks the second fatal wildfire event in Utah this summer. Three firefighters were killed in June while battling wildfires near the Colorado border, while a fourth firefighter later died from injuries sustained in the incident.
