The Federal Government has announced plans to expand access to free television services across Nigeria through a renewed Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme, targeting at least 40 million households with up to 100 free-to-air television channels.
The Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Charles Ebuebu, disclosed the initiative during an interview in Abuja on Wednesday. He explained that the new DSO strategy has shifted from the previous terrestrial broadcasting model to a satellite-based platform, which will provide nationwide coverage from the outset.
According to Ebuebu, the earlier terrestrial system reached only a limited number of states and required expensive infrastructure, including about 160 transmission towers, to achieve full national coverage.
He said the satellite platform already broadcasts more than 73 free-to-air channels and is expected to increase that number to 100 channels in the coming months.
The NBC chief noted that the project is being implemented in partnership with the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT), which is providing satellite and ground services for the programme.
He added that the new system will enable Nigerians to access television stations from every region of the country regardless of their location, while offering improved picture quality, wider coverage, and more local content.
Ebuebu said the initiative is expected to promote national integration by making regional television channels available to viewers across the country.
