Moniepoint Brings Fintech Engineers Together to Strengthen Infrastructure Resilience

Moniepoint has brought together senior engineering professionals from Nigeria’s fintech sector to discuss how to build stronger and more reliable financial technology infrastructure.

The inaugural Moniepoint Off the Record Engineering Mixer, held recently in Lagos, provided a platform for technical leaders from companies including Flutterwave, Cowrywise and Nomba to share experiences on scaling fintech systems.

Discussions focused on distributed systems, payment infrastructure, system failures, network dependencies, security and designing platforms that can withstand disruptions.

Speaking at the event, Moniepoint’s Engineering Manager for Card Payments, Ayomide Kolawole, said reliable payment infrastructure requires engineers to understand where transactions can fail and develop appropriate responses.

He said the company’s goal was not only to process transactions quickly but also to ensure customers do not suffer the consequences when payment systems fail.

Moniepoint said its card payment infrastructure handles tens of millions of transactions daily and uses different mechanisms depending on how certain the outcome of a transaction is.

The company explained that transactions unlikely to succeed can be declined quickly, while transactions with uncertain outcomes undergo additional checks before a final response is given to customers.

It also said its systems monitor the performance of issuing banks across different processors in real time, including transaction success rates and response times. When a bank or destination exceeds a configured threshold, the system can automatically stop routing transactions there to reduce delays and prevent a buildup of failed or pending transactions.

The engineering sessions also examined technical approaches such as sharding, asynchronous processing and service decomposition, with participants discussing their operational and maintenance implications.

Moniepoint said the event highlighted the importance of collaboration, observability and security in improving the resilience of Nigeria’s fintech infrastructure.
