South Korea’s Ruling Party Wins Big in Local Elections, Strengthens Political Mandate

South Korea’s ruling Democratic Party has secured a decisive victory in the country’s local elections and parliamentary by-elections, strengthening its political position and expanding its control across key regions.

The party won 12 out of 16 major mayoral and gubernatorial seats, including a surprise win in Busan, traditionally a conservative stronghold. The opposition People Power Party secured four seats, including retaining Seoul, where Mayor Oh Se-hoon was re-elected for a fifth term.

In the parliamentary by-elections held alongside the local polls, the Democratic Party won nine of 14 contested seats, while the opposition won four, and one seat went to an independent candidate.

The results are seen as a strong endorsement of the ruling party’s reform agenda and a setback for the opposition as it continues to rebuild after recent political turmoil.

Analysts say the outcome is likely to reinforce the government’s authority and provide momentum for ongoing policy reforms ahead of the next national political cycle.
