The Kano State Government has renovated and equipped 320 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the 44 local government areas of the state as part of efforts to improve healthcare services.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, disclosed this during a press briefing marking Democracy Day and the third anniversary of Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration.
He said the government inherited 1,236 health centres in poor condition in 2023 but had rehabilitated 320 facilities within three years.
According to the commissioner, the state government, in collaboration with the Federal Government, has recruited additional healthcare workers and deployed them to health facilities.
He added that Kano plans to employ about 7,000 more health personnel, including nurses and midwives, to strengthen medical services across the state.
Dr. Yusuf said the administration was also improving secondary healthcare, ensuring the availability of essential medicines, and restoring professional training for health workers.
He highlighted the establishment of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control as a major achievement, saying it has improved the state’s ability to prevent and respond to public health emergencies.
The commissioner also revealed that routine immunisation campaigns had been intensified across the state to reduce the spread of diseases, including diphtheria.
He urged residents to take preventive measures, especially avoiding overcrowded and poorly ventilated places.
He further stated that free tuberculosis screening, including for pregnant women, was ongoing across Kano State.
