Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei says he approved the recent agreement between Iran and the United States, despite initially having a different opinion about the deal.
In a statement carried by Iranian state media, Khamenei said he gave approval after President Masoud Pezeshkian and other officials assured him that Iran’s interests and national rights would be protected.
He warned that Tehran would reject any additional demands from Washington but said future direct talks with the US could continue.
The agreement, signed electronically by US President Donald Trump and President Pezeshkian, follows a ceasefire aimed at ending the conflict that began after US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28.
The deal has opened a 60-day negotiation period focusing on issues including sanctions relief and Iran’s nuclear programme.
The United States has announced the lifting of its naval blockade of Iranian ports, while Iran has moved towards reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.
Iran also announced that commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz would not pay transit fees for 60 days.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) welcomed the agreement and said technical discussions on verification measures would now begin.
Meanwhile, some uncertainty remains over whether Iranian officials will attend planned talks in Switzerland to discuss implementation of the agreement.
