Donald Trump has announced a temporary pause in a US military operation aimed at escorting stranded vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, signaling potential progress in negotiations with Iran.
The operation, known as “Project Freedom,” was designed to ensure safe passage for commercial shipping after tensions in the Gulf disrupted global trade. Trump said the decision to suspend the mission came following requests from several countries, including Pakistan, and indications that a comprehensive agreement with Iran may be close.
“We have agreed to pause the movement of ships for a short period to determine whether a final deal can be reached,” Trump stated on his Truth Social platform.
Despite the pause, the broader blockade in the region remains in place. The US maintains pressure on Tehran to reopen the vital shipping route and curb its nuclear activities as part of ongoing peace talks.
Recent days have seen heightened tensions in the Gulf, with US forces reporting the destruction of Iranian boats, drones, and missiles. Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned vessels to follow designated routes or face consequences, reinforcing Iran’s assertive stance over the waterway.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington has concluded its offensive phase against Iran but remains ready to respond if provoked. He stressed that the strategic waterway must remain open to international shipping.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which about one-fifth of global energy supplies pass, has been largely disrupted since the outbreak of hostilities earlier this year. The situation has contributed to rising oil prices and increased concerns about global economic stability.
While a ceasefire between the US and Iran is still holding, officials say the coming days will be crucial in determining whether diplomatic efforts can lead to a lasting resolution.
