At least 23 soldiers from Chad have been killed and 26 others wounded following an overnight attack by the armed group Boko Haram in the volatile Lake Chad region.
According to the Chadian military, the assault took place late Monday on the island of Barka Tolorom, a key position within the lake’s swampy terrain. Troops said they pushed back the attackers after intense clashes, with several fighters reportedly killed in the confrontation.
President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno condemned the assault, describing it as a “cowardly attack” and vowed that the military would intensify operations to eliminate the group. He also extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers.
The Lake Chad basin—where Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, and Chad meet—has long been a hotspot for insurgent activity. Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the ISIL-affiliated Islamic State West Africa Province, frequently exploit the area’s difficult terrain to launch attacks.
The latest violence highlights ongoing security challenges in the region, despite repeated military offensives aimed at dismantling extremist networks.
