U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine, scheduled to take effect from May 9 to May 11.
According to Trump, the temporary truce will halt all military operations during the period and include a large-scale prisoner exchange involving 1,000 detainees from each side.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said the ceasefire could become a major step toward ending the prolonged conflict, which he described as one of the deadliest wars in modern history.
The U.S. leader stated that both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed to the arrangement following direct discussions with his administration.
Russian state media outlet TASS reported that Moscow had accepted the proposal to extend the truce through May 11 and proceed with the “1,000-for-1,000” prisoner exchange initiative.
Zelenskyy later confirmed the agreement, signaling rare simultaneous support from both sides for a temporary halt in fighting as diplomatic negotiations continue.
Trump added that ongoing talks aimed at securing a broader peace settlement are making steady progress.
