Putin Declares Russia Will Defeat NATO-Backed Forces in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Russia will emerge victorious in what he described as a confrontation with NATO-backed forces in Ukraine.

Speaking during the Victory Day parade in Moscow on Saturday, Putin praised Russian troops involved in the Ukraine conflict and linked their mission to the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany during World War II.

Addressing military personnel and foreign guests at Red Square, the Russian leader said the “generation of victors” continues to inspire soldiers participating in what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Putin stated that Russian forces were confronting “an aggressive force” supported by the entire NATO alliance, adding that “victory has always been and will remain ours.”

He also highlighted developments in Russia’s defense sector, saying scientists and engineers were creating new weapons systems and expanding military production based on battlefield experience gained during the conflict.

The annual Victory Day celebrations were held under tight security due to concerns over possible Ukrainian drone attacks. Foreign leaders from Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan attended the event, while members of the North Korean military also participated in the parade.

Ahead of the commemoration, Moscow proposed a two-day ceasefire on May 8 and 9, warning Ukraine against disrupting the celebrations. Kiev separately announced its own temporary ceasefire, but both sides later accused each other of violations.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a ceasefire and a large prisoner exchange involving 1,000 detainees from each side, describing the move as a possible step toward ending the war.
