Several countries have summoned Israeli ambassadors following international outrage over the treatment of pro-Palestinian activists detained during an aid flotilla bound for Gaza.
The diplomatic backlash intensified after Israel’s far-right security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, posted a video showing detained activists kneeling with their hands tied. The footage triggered widespread condemnation from governments across Europe, Asia, and beyond.
Countries including France, Canada, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Germany, and others summoned Israeli envoys to formally protest what they described as degrading treatment of civilians.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot called the conduct shown in the video “unacceptable,” while Canadian officials described the incident as deeply troubling and demanded urgent clarification and humane treatment of all detainees.
The activists were part of a flotilla organized to deliver aid to Gaza. Organizers said Israeli naval forces intercepted the vessels in international waters, detaining hundreds of participants and transferring them to Israeli-controlled areas. Some boats were reportedly stopped after attempts to breach the maritime blockade.
Israel’s foreign ministry confirmed that the vessels and their passengers were being taken for processing, while insisting its forces were acting within security procedures.
Reports from flotilla organizers claim that several detainees have begun a hunger strike in protest of their detention and in solidarity with Palestinians held in Israeli custody.
The incident has also drawn criticism from political leaders in South Korea, Ireland, and other countries, who questioned the legality of the interceptions and called for the immediate release of their nationals.
The developments have significantly escalated diplomatic tensions, with multiple governments now demanding explanations, consular access, and the return of detained activists.
