Iran has urged the United Nations Security Council to take action against what it describes as repeated threats and violations of international law by the United States and its allies.
In a statement delivered at a UN Security Council debate on the protection of civilians, Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir-Saeid Iravani, accused the Council of failing to respond to alleged war crimes committed during recent military tensions involving the US and Israel.
He claimed that civilian infrastructure, including schools in Iran, was targeted during the conflict and said such actions resulted in significant civilian casualties. He further criticized what he described as ongoing threats by US officials against Iran, including rhetoric suggesting attacks on its infrastructure and leadership.
Iran argued that the normalization of such threats by a permanent member of the Security Council undermines international law and sets a dangerous precedent. The envoy also said those responsible for the alleged aggression must be held accountable under international law.
Tehran reiterated that its military response during the conflict was conducted under the principle of self-defense, while rejecting accusations that distort the situation.
The statement also referred to earlier hostilities involving Iran and the United States, during which both sides exchanged strikes before a temporary ceasefire was brokered through international mediation.
Iran called on the international community to uphold the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, non-aggression, and peaceful dispute resolution.
