US Lawmaker Urges Trump to Pursue Diplomatic Deal to End Iran War

US Congressman Adam Smith has called on President Donald Trump to pursue a negotiated settlement to end the ongoing war against Iran, arguing that continued military action has failed to achieve Washington’s strategic objectives.

Smith, the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, made the remarks in a post on X, where he questioned the effectiveness of the US administration’s approach to the conflict.

According to the lawmaker, more than seven months of warfare have not delivered the strategic outcomes sought by the Trump administration.

He urged the president to reassess the available options and prioritise measures that would protect the interests of the American people and the country’s regional partners.

Smith also suggested that a diplomatic agreement modelled on the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) could provide a pathway towards ending the conflict.

The JCPOA was an international nuclear agreement designed to restrict Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.

Smith’s statement adds to the debate in Washington over whether diplomatic negotiations could offer a viable alternative to continued military confrontation with Iran.
