US President Donald Trump has announced $200 billion in planned investments from South Korea, including $54 billion for a major liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Alaska.
Trump made the announcement at the White House on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, describing it as one of the largest energy infrastructure investments in US history.
The Alaska project will involve the construction of a 1,300-kilometre natural gas pipeline linking the North Slope region to an LNG export terminal in southern Alaska.
Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan said the project could create about 12,000 jobs during construction and provide energy supplies to Alaskans, the US military and Asian allies for decades.
The investment is part of a broader $350 billion trade and investment agreement reached between the United States and South Korea last November. Under the agreement, South Korea committed $150 billion to US shipbuilding and another $200 billion to strategic sectors.
The latest announcements also include South Korean investments in nuclear power plants and a 6-gigawatt gas-fired power facility in Texas.
Trump's announcement comes ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections, with several key Senate races expected to determine control of Congress.
The South Korean investments also come amid changing relations between Washington and Seoul. While the two countries remain long-standing allies, disagreements have emerged over military exercises, trade and South Korea's position on US policy toward Iran and China.
