Kano Records 380 Arrests, 230 Convictions in Drug Crackdown

The Kano State Government has arrested more than 380 suspects and secured over 230 convictions in the first two months of its intensified campaign against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, disclosed this on Thursday while delivering an address at the 66th Independence Anniversary celebration held at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium in Kano.

Yusuf said the state government established the Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in July 2026 and issued an Executive Order to strengthen efforts against illicit drugs, thuggery and other related criminal activities.

“We have arrested more than 380 suspects and secured over 230 convictions in the first two months of the state’s intensified campaign against drug abuse and illicit trafficking,” the governor said.

According to the governor, the task force has also dismantled several drug joints and criminal hideouts across the state as part of its enforcement operations.

The figures are consistent with earlier figures released in September by the chairman of the task force, Muhuyi Gado, who said more than 380 suspects had been arrested and over 230 convictions secured since the committee was inaugurated on July 22.

Yusuf described the fight against drug abuse and criminality as a collective responsibility involving security agencies, traditional institutions, religious leaders, communities, parents and citizens.

He urged young people to stay away from drugs, violence and criminal activities, encouraging them instead to pursue education, agriculture, technology, entrepreneurship, vocational training and creative industries.

The governor also pledged that his administration would continue to support security agencies, strengthen community-based intelligence gathering and address social challenges contributing to crime and insecurity.

He called on residents to provide credible information to security agencies to help prevent and tackle criminal activities across the state.

The task force has reportedly combined enforcement operations with rehabilitation and public awareness campaigns. Its chairman previously disclosed that about 125 people had been referred to the Kano Reformatory Institute in Kiru for rehabilitation.

Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating a safer environment where young people can pursue lawful livelihoods and contribute to the development of Kano State.
