The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that more than 9.32 million young Nigerians were newly registered during the 2026 Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise ahead of the 2027 general election.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed the figure on Wednesday in Abuja during the investiture of nine INEC Youth Ambassadors. He was represented at the event by a National Commissioner, Professor Rhoda Gumus.
Amupitan said the large number of newly registered young voters highlights the important role of youth participation in Nigeria’s electoral process.
According to him, the participation of young Nigerians would contribute to shaping electoral outcomes and strengthening public confidence in democracy.
He explained that the appointment of nine INEC Youth Ambassadors was aimed at improving the commission’s engagement with young Nigerians and making electoral information more accessible through credible and influential voices within youth communities and social networks.
The INEC chairman urged the ambassadors to promote voter awareness, encourage peaceful and responsible participation, combat electoral misinformation and inspire young Nigerians to take an active role in the country’s democratic process.
He also charged them to uphold integrity, impartiality and responsible citizenship in carrying out their duties.
The nine ambassadors were drawn from the entertainment industry, including movie, music and comedy. They are Amal Umar, Christopher Yohanna (Uncle CY), Alex Kool Ibeh (Mr Kool), Mike Godson, Emmanuel Ikubese, Seun Ajayi, Ibrahim Tukur Bello (Disability Is Not Inability), Sunday Agbaji and Ambassador Thompson Ukeki.
Meanwhile, INEC also presented a Certificate of Return to Hon. Kallamu MaiJama’a, winner of the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency bye-election held on September 19, 2026.
The certificate was presented to the member-elect on Wednesday at INEC headquarters in Abuja by the National Commissioner supervising Gombe State, Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq Malafa (retd.).
MaiJama’a commended INEC for conducting what he described as a free, fair and credible election.
