The International Criminal Court (ICC) has strongly condemned sanctions imposed on it by the United States government, urging its member states to provide the necessary support to ensure it continues to operate.
In a statement released on Friday, the court described the sanctions as an attempt to obstruct justice and prevent it from carrying out its responsibilities.
The ICC said the US action was an attack on the rule of law and the foundations of the international legal system.
"It is an attempt to obstruct the course of justice and to prevent the Court from doing what it was created to do," the court said.
The court reaffirmed its commitment to fulfilling its mandate of prosecuting individuals accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and the crime of aggression when national authorities are unwilling or unable to take appropriate action.
However, the ICC warned that it could not continue its work without assistance from its member states.
The court called on countries that support its establishment to ensure it has the financial and operational resources needed to carry out its duties.
"The Court cannot stand alone. Its fate now rests also in the hands of the states that created it," the statement added.
The ICC also stressed that defending the institution was not merely about protecting a single organisation but about preserving an international system based on the rule of law.
The United States is not a member of the ICC.
The latest development comes amid growing tensions between Washington and the international court over its activities and authority.
The court maintained that it would continue to carry out its responsibilities despite the sanctions, while calling on its member states to help protect its independence and ensure the continuation of its operations.
