The Federal Government has begun discussions with electricity distribution companies on plans to establish dedicated Energy Zones that could provide 24-hour electricity supply to homes, businesses and industries in major demand centres across Nigeria.

The initiative, announced by the Ministry of Power, will initially focus on the Lagos axis, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor and the Enugu-Port Harcourt corridor.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, held a closed-door meeting with the management of selected electricity distribution companies to discuss the proposed Energy Zones.

According to the ministry, the initiative is aimed at addressing distribution challenges and ensuring that electricity generated and transmitted to the national grid reaches consumers more reliably, particularly in areas with high commercial and industrial demand.

Tegbe said the challenges facing Nigeria's power sector were not limited to generation and transmission, but also involved the ability of distribution companies to receive and deliver available electricity to consumers.

He explained that the proposed Energy Zones would help bridge the gap between available electricity and consumption, while also supporting commercial and industrial activities and improving the revenue and collection performance of distribution companies.

The proposed zones will target areas where reliable electricity is considered critical to businesses, manufacturing and other productive activities.

However, the ministry has not announced a specific implementation date, the expected power capacity of the zones or details of the infrastructure investments required to achieve round-the-clock electricity supply.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Ikeja Electric, Eko Power, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company and Sahara Energy Group.

The proposed Energy Zones come amid continuing concerns over the reliability of electricity supply in Nigeria and the capacity of distribution companies to deliver available power to consumers.
