US President Donald Trump has jokingly suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz “Trump Strait,” despite escalating tensions and renewed clashes between the United States and Iran.
Trump made the suggestion on his Truth Social platform, claiming that the United States had taken control of the strategic waterway.
“Now that we have it under USA control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to Trump Strait?” Trump wrote.
The White House later shared a map of the Gulf using the proposed name and commented that it “has a nice ring to it.”
Trump has previously suggested taking control of the Strait of Hormuz and even shared a map portraying the waterway as a new US territory.
However, when asked later whether he was serious about changing the name, Trump appeared to dismiss the idea, saying it was “just thrown out there.”
The president has previously made controversial suggestions about changing geographical names. In January 2025, he ordered the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” He has also supported other name changes involving US landmarks.
Meanwhile, tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high, with renewed military strikes around the Strait of Hormuz.
The United States launched fresh attacks near the waterway after accusing Iran of renewed efforts to lay mines. Iran said one of the US strikes killed four people at a wedding and condemned the attack as a “war crime.”
Iran subsequently launched retaliatory strikes against US military bases in several countries, including Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and Iraq.
The conflict has also pushed global oil prices higher and increased fuel costs in the United States. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most important oil routes, carrying a significant share of global petroleum supplies.
Trump said the United States was prepared to launch further attacks against Iran, although he suggested the renewed military campaign would not continue for too long.
“It was a very heavy attack last night, and we’re prepared to do another one any time we want,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
