New York City has announced a temporary ban on the use of generative artificial intelligence tools by elementary and middle school students during the upcoming academic year.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the one-year moratorium on Wednesday, saying the policy is part of a broader review of how students in the city’s public schools use artificial intelligence.
The ban will cover student-facing generative AI software for pupils through eighth grade. City officials described it as one of the broadest school AI restrictions in the United States.
While younger students will be restricted from using generative AI, the city plans to expand AI education for older students. Public high school students will receive AI literacy classes twice a year, while selected schools will run pilot programmes allowing some students to use approved AI platforms under teacher supervision.
AI companion chatbots will be prohibited across all grade levels.
Mamdani said schools have a responsibility to encourage students to question and critically examine new technologies rather than accept them without scrutiny.
The policy comes as schools across the United States grapple with the growing use of AI in education. Educators are increasingly teaching students how to use the technology responsibly while trying to prevent excessive dependence on AI and its use for academic cheating.
Los Angeles has also temporarily blocked access to generative AI tools on student devices across all grade levels.
