The European Union is preparing additional sanctions against Russia after Germany accused Moscow of being behind a failed drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas said on Wednesday that the bloc was working on new measures to increase pressure on Russia, describing the incident as an attempt to intimidate Europe.
Kallas said the EU was preparing sanctions against about 1,600 individuals and entities linked to Russia’s military sector. She also said EU foreign ministers broadly supported restricting former Russian military personnel from entering the bloc and were considering tighter visa rules for Russian tourists.
Three drones carrying explosives were discovered in and around Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4, temporarily disrupting air traffic. Germany has blamed Russia for the incident, but Moscow has denied any involvement. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the evidence had been “planted.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU was examining ways to further weaken Russia’s ability to finance its war, calling the airport incident a new escalation on European soil.
The EU has already imposed sanctions on more than 3,000 Russian officials, business figures and companies since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Russia would face consequences for its actions, while Moscow’s Foreign Ministry summoned Germany’s envoy and strongly rejected the accusations.
