Taliban Defends Afghanistan Protest Ban, Says It Follows Islamic Law

The Taliban government in Afghanistan has defended its decision to ban all forms of protests, saying the measure is in accordance with Islamic law.

The government introduced the controversial rule last month, declaring that “all types of protests are banned.” The decision has attracted strong criticism from international human rights organisations, which accuse the Taliban of suppressing dissent.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the ban was fully consistent with Islamic law, arguing that protests were not part of the Islamic system of governance.

He said Afghans who have concerns should instead approach the government directly rather than organise public demonstrations.

Mujahid also argued that the ban would prevent the destruction of private property and stop people from wasting time.

However, Human Rights Watch described the measure as another attempt by the Taliban to suppress opposition, while Amnesty International called it a serious violation of human rights.

Although protests have been uncommon since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, UN experts reported that at least two people were killed in June when security forces allegedly opened fire during a women’s rights demonstration in Herat.

The Taliban has continued to introduce strict regulations affecting daily life in Afghanistan, prompting growing concern among international rights groups.
