Tensions have escalated in the occupied West Bank after Israeli forces fired tear gas inside a mosque in Madama, near Nablus, while settlers allegedly attempted to set fire to another mosque in the nearby town of Bazariya.
The tear-gas attack occurred as worshippers gathered for evening prayers. Palestinian authorities said several elderly worshippers suffered breathing difficulties, while footage showed people coughing and struggling to breathe inside the mosque.
Earlier on Tuesday, suspected Israeli settlers reportedly attempted to burn the Nur al-Din Zanki Mosque in Bazariya. Images from the scene showed burn marks around a window and Hebrew-language graffiti sprayed on the building.
Palestinian authorities condemned the incidents, saying at least 13 mosques in the occupied West Bank have been targeted or otherwise violated by Israeli forces or settlers since the beginning of 2026.
The Palestinian presidency warned that the continued attacks on religious sites could fuel wider religious tensions and have serious consequences for the region.
The attacks come amid a broader increase in violence against Palestinians in the West Bank since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in 2023. Data cited by Al Jazeera and Anadolu indicate that attacks on mosques have risen significantly since then.
The United Nations reported in August that at least 76 Palestinians had been killed in the West Bank this year, while about 3,800 people had been displaced by settler violence, demolitions and evictions. More than 1,430 incidents involving casualties or property damage have also been documented.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces reportedly arrested at least 14 Palestinians in several areas of the West Bank on Tuesday and carried out other operations, including the uprooting of olive trees, demolition of greenhouses and the issuance of a demolition notice for a Palestinian home.
The latest incidents have intensified concerns over the growing violence and attacks on Palestinian religious and civilian sites across the occupied West Bank.
