Germany Shuts Russian Consulate After Alleged Drone Attack

Germany has ordered the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn following what it described as a Russian “hybrid attack” involving drones at Leipzig Airport.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced the measures alongside Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, accusing Russia of carrying out activities aimed at destabilising and intimidating Germany and other European countries.

Wadephul said the Leipzig incident was part of a broader pattern involving alleged disinformation, sabotage, threats and aggression against Europe. He stressed that Germany did not want further deterioration in relations with Russia but said Moscow had shown little willingness to compromise or end the war in Ukraine.

As part of Germany’s response, the Russian Consulate General in Bonn will close on September 18. Berlin will also terminate the lease of the Russian House in the German capital and push for additional European Union sanctions against individuals allegedly connected to hybrid attacks.

Germany also plans to increase pressure on Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” while strengthening intelligence and defence cooperation with NATO and EU partners.

Wadephul said Germany would continue supporting Ukraine and strengthen its own defence capabilities. He added that the Russian ambassador had been summoned over the incident.

The German foreign minister maintained that the government’s actions were intended to protect the country’s security and social cohesion, insisting that Germany would not be intimidated or divided by Russian activities.
