Ebola Outbreak: Nigeria to Screen Travellers from Affected Nations

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has announced enhanced screening measures for travellers arriving from countries experiencing active or relevant transmission of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

The agency disclosed this in an interim public health advisory issued on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, amid the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to the advisory, signed by NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, travellers from affected countries may be required to complete a Health Declaration Form as part of measures to strengthen surveillance and prevent the importation and spread of the virus in Nigeria.

The NCDC said the measure followed an assessment of the evolving epidemiological situation and consultations with public health experts and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

“Travellers from countries with active or relevant EVD transmission may be required to complete the Health Declaration Form as part of enhanced public health surveillance and follow-up measures,” the agency stated.

However, passengers arriving from countries without relevant Ebola transmission are currently exempt from completing the form.

The NCDC also urged Nigerians to remain vigilant for symptoms associated with Ebola and seek medical attention promptly if symptoms develop.

The agency advised travellers and members of the public to report relevant travel or exposure history to health officials where applicable.

The NCDC said Nigeria remains on high alert, with preparedness and response activities ongoing. It added that the measures would continue to be reviewed based on changes in the epidemiological situation and public health risk assessment.
