WhatsApp to Begin Charging Businesses Per Message From October

WhatsApp to Begin Charging Businesses Per Message From October

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, will begin charging businesses for certain messages sent through the WhatsApp Business Platform from October 1, 2026.

The new charges will mainly affect large companies such as banks, fintech firms, telecom operators, e-commerce businesses, logistics companies and retailers that use the WhatsApp Business Platform to communicate with customers.

Ordinary WhatsApp users and most small businesses using the standard WhatsApp Business app will not be affected.

Under the current system, when a customer contacts a business, a 24-hour customer service window opens, allowing the business to respond without paying for certain messages. From October 1, however, Meta will charge businesses per message for service messages and qualifying utility messages sent during that period.

Utility messages include payment confirmations, order updates and delivery notifications.

For Nigerian businesses, a service or utility message is expected to cost around $0.0101 (about ₦14), while marketing messages could cost around $0.062 (about ₦84), depending on the exchange rate.

For example, a Nigerian fintech sending 500,000 chargeable messages could pay about $5,050, or roughly ₦6.8 million, in Meta fees alone.

Meta has also warned businesses and solution providers to add a payment method before September 30, 2026. Businesses without a payment method may have their chargeable messages stopped from October 1.

The change is expected to increase operating costs for Nigerian companies that rely heavily on WhatsApp for customer service, transactions and notifications.
