At least 49 people have been killed and 33 others wounded after armed men attacked a seasonal cattle camp and a nearby village in Warrap State, northwestern South Sudan.
The attack occurred early Thursday at the Machar-Pakuek cattle camp and Mading Juer Boma in Tonj North County, according to local officials.
Warrap government spokesperson William Wol Mayom Bol described the attackers as an armed cross-border criminal network and urged residents to remain calm and avoid retaliation.
The local government condemned the violence and appealed to humanitarian organisations to assist people displaced by the conflict.
The latest attack comes just three weeks after another raid in the same area killed 60 people and wounded 50 others.
South Sudan has long faced deadly cattle raids and communal clashes, largely driven by competition over grazing land and water. In 2025, President Salva Kiir declared a six-month state of emergency across the country following an increase in violent inter-communal cattle raids.
UN officials have also raised concerns about the continuing cycle of communal violence in Warrap and other parts of South Sudan.
