More than 50 coordinated arson and incendiary attacks have been reported across Thailand’s insurgency-hit southern provinces, according to the Thai military.
The attacks occurred between 8:00 p.m. and midnight on Saturday, mainly in Narathiwat, with additional incidents in neighbouring Yala and Pattani. At least two people were injured.
Targets included a local government office, a convenience store, vehicles and telecommunications towers. In one incident in Narathiwat, a bomb explosion injured two women.
Authorities imposed an overnight curfew in Narathiwat, which was lifted on Sunday morning. No further attacks were reported that day.
No group has claimed responsibility. The attacks come amid a long-running insurgency in Thailand’s predominantly Muslim southern provinces, where rebels have sought greater autonomy from the Buddhist-majority country. More than 7,000 people have been killed since the conflict began in 2004.
The main insurgent organisation is the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN). Peace talks facilitated by Malaysia since 2013 have repeatedly stalled.
The latest violence follows an attack in July in which five soldiers were killed at a checkpoint in Narathiwat. The incident led authorities to postpone planned peace talks.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and cabinet members are expected to visit Hat Yai next week to discuss investment, flood prevention and security issues.
