The father of a U.S. Navy sailor serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has been taken into federal immigration detention, according to Reuters.
Luis Manuel Aviles Roa, a Nicaraguan immigrant, was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol during a traffic stop in Key West, Florida.
His son, Joshua Aviles, who has been deployed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln for more than nine months during U.S. military operations in the Middle East, said he was devastated by his father's detention. He said the family had been working through the immigration process to obtain his father's green card and was waiting for approval.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Aviles Roa had entered the United States illegally and would remain in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody while removal proceedings continue.
The department also said having a family member serving in the U.S. military does not exempt anyone from U.S. immigration laws.
The case comes amid the Trump administration's intensified immigration crackdown, which the government says is aimed at strengthening national security. Rights groups, however, have criticized the crackdown and raised concerns about due process and racial profiling.
Meanwhile, the USS Abraham Lincoln recently left the Middle East after spending more than 200 consecutive days at sea, reportedly setting a modern-day record for the U.S. Navy carrier.
