A woman rescued after spending more than six months in the custody of kidnappers has described the harsh conditions she and other victims endured while in captivity.
Fatima Mohammed, one of 145 abductees recently rescued and handed over to the Niger State Government by the Federal Government, said the victims spent six months and two weeks in captivity without basic necessities.
Speaking after her rescue, Fatima expressed happiness at the prospect of reuniting with her family.
> "I am very excited because I am going to be reunited with my family again," she said.
She explained that the abductees had no shelter and were forced to sleep outdoors throughout their captivity, regardless of the weather.
According to her, they had no spare clothing, making them wear the same wet clothes until they dried on their bodies after rainfall. She also said they suffered from hunger and other difficult living conditions.
Another rescued victim, 17-year-old Isyaka Ahmed, revealed that kidnappers threatened to kill him after he attempted to escape.
He said hunger and physical exhaustion were among the biggest challenges they faced during their ordeal, adding that several boys are still being held by the kidnappers.
Despite the traumatic experience, Isyaka expressed gratitude for his freedom and the opportunity to reunite with his loved ones.
Receiving the rescued victims on behalf of the Niger State Government, the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Mohammed Sani Dantoro, described their return as a joyful moment for the emirate.
He likened the occasion to a Sallah celebration and thanked everyone involved in securing the victims' safe rescue.
