The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of weakening democratic institutions and turning Nigeria into what it described as a “full authoritarian state.”
The opposition party made the allegation in a statement issued on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary of the Interim National Working Committee, Ini Ememobong.
The PDP said a recent assessment by the Human Rights Foundation, published on its Tyranny Tracker platform, classified Nigeria as a fully authoritarian regime.
According to the party, the assessment reflects what many Nigerians have allegedly experienced under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government, including what it described as restrictions on dissent, weakened democratic safeguards and inadequate checks on executive power.
The PDP also alleged that freedom of expression was under pressure, citing recent criticism directed at Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria and the Catholic Church.
The party further criticised the National Assembly, accusing lawmakers of failing to provide effective oversight of the executive arm of government.
It also expressed concern about the 2027 general elections, alleging that political developments could undermine the credibility of the polls.
The PDP called on the Tinubu administration to take immediate steps to reduce political tensions and ensure that democratic institutions operate independently.
It accused the government of suppressing opposition voices, allegedly using security agencies against political opponents and increasing political interference in the electoral process.
The party warned that the 2027 presidential election would determine not only who governs Nigeria but also the strength and survival of the country’s democracy.
It urged President Tinubu and all political actors to support a free, fair, credible and peaceful electoral process.
The PDP also called on Nigerians to continue demanding accountability from elected leaders at all levels, describing accountability as a fundamental requirement of democracy.
