The Osun State Government has denied allegations that ₦11 billion was looted from the state's treasury, insisting that no public funds were misappropriated.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, described the reported allegations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as baseless and politically motivated.
According to the state government, the freezing of its bank accounts was aimed at disrupting the payment of palliatives promised to workers, alleging that the action was carried out at the instance of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola.
The government said it had already paid the palliatives to all state workers despite the account freeze, adding that similar cost-of-living support had been provided in the past.
Rejecting claims of financial misconduct, the government maintained that available state resources have been used to fund infrastructure projects, workers' welfare, and other development programmes.
It also alleged that the EFCC has been investigating top state officials since March 2026 without uncovering evidence of wrongdoing, describing the probe as a politically motivated "witch-hunt."
The state further argued that if the anti-graft agency had credible evidence of corruption, it should follow due legal procedures instead of freezing government accounts.
The response comes after the EFCC said it froze the Osun State Government's bank accounts to prevent the alleged diversion of public funds ahead of the state's governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.
The matter has intensified the dispute between the Osun State Government and the EFCC, with both sides standing by their respective positions.
