OPay has dismissed a viral social media post claiming that the financial technology company would shut down its operations from September 1.
The company described the claim as false and urged customers to disregard the message, assuring users that its services would continue as normal.
A post circulating on social media had alleged that OPay would suspend operations indefinitely from September 1 and would no longer process transactions. It also advised customers to withdraw their funds from the platform to avoid possible inconvenience.
However, OPay, in a disclaimer issued on Sunday, said the information did not originate from the company and contained several warning signs indicating that it was fake.
“OPay is not going on break in September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere,” the company said.
The fintech firm advised customers to rely only on information published through its verified and official communication channels.
“Take a closer look at the viral post, and you’ll spot the red flags. Always verify before you share. Filter the noise! Follow our official pages for authentic OPay updates,” the company added.
The incident highlights the growing challenge of brand impersonation and misinformation on social media, with fraudsters increasingly using fake corporate announcements to mislead members of the public.
OPay has urged its customers to verify suspicious messages before acting on or sharing them.
Established in 2018, OPay has grown into one of Nigeria’s major digital financial platforms, offering payment, savings, credit and other financial services.
