Polish authorities have launched a terrorism investigation following a fire at a factory that produces components for drones supplied to the Polish and Ukrainian militaries.
The Polish National Prosecution Office announced on Monday that it was investigating the possibility that the fire was deliberately caused as part of activities linked to a foreign intelligence service.
According to prosecutors, the investigation concerns suspected involvement in the activities of a foreign intelligence service targeting Poland, as well as a terrorist offence involving the deliberate setting of fire at the premises of WB Electronics using a device containing flammable materials.
The fire broke out shortly after midnight at the company's facility in Skarżysko-Kamienna, south of Warsaw. Firefighters reportedly took about two hours to bring the blaze under control.
Poland's Internal Security Agency is assisting police with the investigation. Authorities have not released further details, citing the confidential nature of the case.
WB Electronics is one of Poland's largest private defence companies. It produces drones, loitering munitions, fire-control systems and military communication equipment. Its FlyEye and Warmate drones are also used by Ukraine's military.
The investigation comes amid growing concerns across Europe over alleged Russian sabotage operations targeting facilities and infrastructure linked to Ukraine's war effort.
Poland has significantly increased its defence spending and military capabilities amid concerns about potential Russian aggression. The country considers WB Electronics an important supplier to its armed forces.
Authorities have not yet publicly confirmed who was responsible for the fire or whether Russia was directly involved.
