Indian students and unemployed young people clashed with police in Patna, the capital of Bihar, during a protest demanding more government jobs and transparency in recruitment examinations.
Police used water cannons and batons after several thousand demonstrators broke through security barricades while marching towards the residence of Bihar’s chief minister. At least 25 protesters were detained and later released, according to the Indian Express.
The protests began the previous week over unemployment but expanded to include demands for education reform. The demonstrations come about a month after large Gen Z-led protests in New Delhi over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, which contributed to the resignation of India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on July 25.
Bihar officials said they were engaging with student representatives and considering their demands. A senior government official described talks with protesters as positive and promised a response within days.
The unrest reflects growing frustration among India’s youth over limited employment opportunities and concerns about government recruitment examinations. Similar protests have also emerged in other states, including Karnataka.
