Five farmers have been killed and five others injured after suspected bandits attacked two communities in Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The attack took place on Sunday morning in Ghandi and Gidan Kare communities, just two days after security operatives reportedly killed several bandits in the area.
According to a security source, the attack was believed to be a reprisal following a security operation in which 15 bandits were reportedly killed at Maikujera.
The attackers reportedly stormed the communities between 7am and 8am as farmers were heading to their farms. Three farmers were killed in Ghandi, while two others were killed in Gidan Kare, where some houses were also set ablaze.
Five other people sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Security personnel were deployed to the affected communities after the attack, but the attackers had already fled before the arrival of the officers.
The spokesman for the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, said he had not yet received a briefing on the incident when contacted.
He said he would obtain the details and provide further information.
