A Pakistani nurse who risked her life to rescue the only newborn who survived a devastating hospital nursery fire will receive one of the country’s prestigious civil awards.
The fire broke out on Wednesday at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, a major government hospital in Islamabad, killing 14 newborn babies.
CCTV footage showed nurse Razia Noreen rushing into the burning nursery and emerging just seconds later with a newborn in her arms. She attempted to return for the other babies but was prevented by intense flames and thick smoke.
Noreen later said she had acted simply because it was her duty and because caring for children was her passion. She also expressed deep sorrow over being unable to save the other infants, saying the tragedy had left her struggling to sleep.
An inquiry ordered by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif found that Noreen entered the nursery and returned with the baby about eight seconds later. The investigation said conditions inside the nursery deteriorated catastrophically within about two minutes.
At the time of the fire, 15 newborns were being cared for on the third floor.
In recognition of her bravery, Noreen will receive the Sitara-i-Khidmat (Star of Service), an honour given for distinguished public service or exceptional contributions to Pakistan. She will also receive about $36,000.
Prime Minister Sharif praised Noreen for showing exceptional courage and devotion to duty by risking her own life to save the newborn.
The announcement has received widespread praise, with many people commending the nurse for her bravery during the tragic incident.
