The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested eight suspects over a violent clash at Gujungu Market in Taura Local Government Area that left two people dead and another injured.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the arrests followed intelligence-led operations aimed at identifying those responsible for the unrest.
Police said the crisis began on July 26 after an altercation between a soldier, identified as Nura Bashir, and a 25-year-old man, Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim, from Miga Local Government Area. During the confrontation, the soldier allegedly stabbed the victim, who later died in hospital.
The incident reportedly sparked widespread violence, with hoodlums attacking a police station, firing bows and arrows at security personnel, and setting two thatched market shops on fire.
Authorities said two suspects were initially arrested for allegedly taking part in the attack on security personnel, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend others who fled.
In a related development on August 2, police arrested six additional suspects accused of attacking two vigilante members with sticks and cutlasses during the unrest. One vigilante member died from injuries sustained in the attack, while the second victim is receiving medical treatment.
Police also recovered six cows believed to have been abandoned during the violence.
The command said investigations are continuing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incidents and ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice.
To prevent a recurrence, the police have begun stakeholder engagements involving community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, Miyetti Allah representatives, youth groups, and other security stakeholders to address the root causes of the crisis.
The Commissioner of Police commended security personnel for their swift response in containing the violence and assured residents of the command's commitment to protecting lives and property. He also urged members of the public to remain peaceful and continue providing credible information to support ongoing investigations.
