At Least 30 Killed as Landfill Collapses in Guinea’s Capital

At least 30 people have died after a huge pile of waste collapsed at Guinea’s largest landfill in Conakry, the country’s capital.

The disaster happened early Sunday, August 23, after heavy rainfall triggered a landslide at the Dar-es-Salaam landfill in the Bbessia district. The collapsing waste buried several makeshift homes near the dumpsite.

Six people were reportedly seriously injured, while rescue teams continued searching for people who might still be trapped under the debris. Excavators were deployed to recover victims and bodies.

Guinea’s Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah visited the scene as rescue operations continued. The government said medical treatment and assistance would be provided to those affected.

Local authorities had planned to close the landfill on August 23 because of safety concerns. Officials had also previously ordered people living near the site to leave due to the risk of further collapses.

A local official said 18 bodies had initially been recovered, before the government later announced that the death toll had risen to at least 30.

Former Prime Minister and opposition figure Cellou Dalein Diallo described the incident as a tragedy and called for a transparent investigation into what caused the disaster.

The rescue operation remains ongoing, and authorities fear the death toll could rise further.
