Six suspected members of an armed criminal group were killed during a joint security operation in Amiyi, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The operation, conducted on Saturday, involved personnel from the Nigeria Police Force Rapid Response Squad, Department of State Services (DSS), 302 Artillery Regiment, Onitsha, Nigerian Navy and Agunachamba security outfit.
According to the Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, the security team acted on credible intelligence and trekked for about four hours through difficult terrain and dense palm forest before locating the suspected criminal camp.
The suspects reportedly opened fire after sighting the security personnel, leading to a prolonged gun battle.
Six suspects were killed during the encounter, while others reportedly escaped with gunshot injuries. Two pump-action firearms and charms were recovered from the camp, which was subsequently dismantled.
However, one security operative was killed and another injured when an explosive device, suspected to have been planted in the area, detonated.
The injured operative is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the security personnel for their courage and professionalism during the operation.
He also expressed condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased operative, while wishing the injured officer a speedy recovery.
The police command said security agencies would continue intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal camps, recovering illegal weapons and preventing violent groups from establishing bases across the state.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and provide credible information to security agencies to support efforts to maintain peace and security in Anambra State.
