The United States has approved a proposed $1.96 billion sale of advanced precision-guided weapon systems and related military equipment to Saudi Arabia, the U.S. State Department announced on Wednesday.
According to the department, the package includes Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS) and associated support equipment aimed at strengthening Saudi Arabia's defense capabilities.
The principal contractor for the deal will be BAE Systems.
U.S. officials said the proposed sale is intended to improve the security of a key regional partner and enhance its ability to address current and future threats, while supporting stability in the Middle East.
The proposed sale will now move through the required congressional review process before it can be finalized.
