Shettima Launches Niger Delta Agriculture Fund to Boost Investment and Food Security

Vice President Kashim Shettima has officially launched the Niger Delta Agricultural Development and Investment Fund and inaugurated a Coordinating Council to drive agricultural development and attract investment across the Niger Delta region.

Speaking at the Niger Delta Agricultural Development and Investment Summit held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Shettima said the initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at revitalising agriculture, improving food security, creating jobs, and diversifying Nigeria's economy.

He stressed that before oil became Nigeria's major source of revenue, agriculture sustained the country's economy, urging stakeholders to return to farming as a key driver of national development.

The summit brought together government officials, investors, development partners, and private sector representatives to promote sustainable agricultural transformation in the Niger Delta.

Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, called on investors to see the Niger Delta as more than an oil-producing region, describing it as a future agricultural powerhouse with vast fertile land suitable for mechanised farming.

NDDC Chairman Chiedu Ebie said the commission remains committed to supporting the Federal Government's agricultural policies, focusing on food security, poverty reduction, job creation, and economic growth.

NDDC Managing Director Samuel Ogbuku noted that the region's fertile soil presents enormous opportunities for agribusiness, adding that the commission will continue investing in infrastructure, including the completion of the Kaa–Ataba Bridge in Rivers State, to support agricultural development.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Marcus Ogunbiyi, reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to moving Nigeria from subsistence farming to modern, mechanised agriculture.

Speakers at the summit encouraged stronger partnerships between government and the private sector to unlock investment opportunities and position the Niger Delta as one of Nigeria's leading agribusiness hubs.
