The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed that the four people rescued after Tuesday's abduction at Government Secondary School, Olowa Agbajo, in Dekina Local Government Area are receiving medical attention and support.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lokoja on Friday, Commissioner of Police Bello Kankarofi said the victims were safely rescued on Thursday through a coordinated operation involving the police, Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), NSCDC, local vigilantes, hunters, and other security agencies.
The victims include the school principal, a NECO official, and two female students who were writing the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examination when armed kidnappers attacked the examination centre.
According to the police commissioner, security forces launched an intensive rescue mission immediately after the incident was reported. Tactical teams and intelligence personnel were deployed, while joint security operatives carried out extensive search operations in nearby forests and communities.
Kankarofi said sustained pressure on the kidnappers forced them to abandon the victims, who were rescued alive at about 7:45 p.m. on Thursday.
He added that the victims have since been reunited with the appropriate authorities and are receiving the necessary medical care and psychological support.
The commissioner disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed the abandoned Government Secondary School had previously been closed by the Kogi State Government because of security concerns. However, it was allegedly being used as an unofficial "special examination centre" for NECO candidates.
Police are also investigating allegations that some individuals facilitated the use of the abandoned school and that the centre had been associated with examination malpractice.
Kankarofi warned that anyone found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted, regardless of their position or status.
He praised the Inspector-General of Police, the Kogi State Government, the Nigerian Army, DSS, NSCDC, local vigilantes, and hunters for their collaboration, assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to arrest those responsible for the abduction.
The police also urged examination bodies, school authorities, and members of the public to support ongoing investigations by providing credible information to help prevent future security threats.
